CJ&S Alum Named EKU’s Executive Director of Public Safety & Risk Management
Bryan Makinen has been selected as the Executive Director, Public Safety & Risk Management for Eastern Kentucky University. Bryan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology from Eastern Kentucky University with a major in Industrial Safety and Risk Management and minors in Environmental Health Sciences and Insurance & Risk Management. Bryan also holds a Master of Public Health degree from Eastern Kentucky University with an emphasis in Environmental Health Science. In addition, he is currently pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies from Eastern Kentucky University.
As Executive Director, Bryan will have direct oversight responsibility for University Public Safety, University Police, 911 Telecommunications Center, Environmental Health & Safety, Risk Management & Insurance Services, and Emergency Management. Under his leadership, the Division provides policing services, designs and implements safety programs, performs industrial hygiene inspections and monitoring, conducts inspections, manages hazardous materials, advises senior management on potential sources of loss, and represents the University to insurance markets. Bryan will also respond to the local Emergency Operations Center and serve as the University liaison in the event of a local community emergency.
Bryan has served Eastern Kentucky University since 2007 in various positions within the Division of Public Safety and the College of Justice and Safety. He has served as the Interim Executive Director, Public Safety, since February 2015.
