Safety City Receives Donation
Lexington/Bluegrass AAA presented Safety City Director Lisa Conley with a check for $1,000 to be used "in the areas most needed" according to Daniel Wheeler, Public Relations Coordinator for AAA.
According to Conley, the money will be spent towards the purchase of new battery chargers for some of the 12 mini-cars used at Safety City.
Safety City is a no-cost safety education program designed for elementary age children, primarily second grade students. Through a partnership with Eastern Kentucky University's College of Justice and Safety and the Lexington Division of Police, instructors provide information on a range of topics which run the spectrum of safety concerns. These currently include traffic, pedestrian, bicycle, and seatbelt and firearm safety.
Additional programs for adults are also planned for Safety City. "Newcomers to the United States can learn the rules of the road through our adult education classes," said Conley. "We are looking for ways to partner with like-minded organizations to expand our programs."
